Newark Bicycle Committee – About Us

A partnership of interested cyclists and agencies working to improve bicycling in Newark, Delaware

What does the committee do?

The Newark Bicycle Committee gives ongoing advice and support to the City of Newark and the Delaware Department of Transportation. Meetings are held at WILMAPCO on the 3rd Thursday, 4 p.m., click here for directions.

Recent accomplishments include:

  • Developed Newark Bicycle Plan
  • Worked with City to get Sharrows on Main Street
  • Initiated and provided guidance through the development of the Pomeroy trail
  • Achieve Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community Award designation by the League of American Bicyclists
  • Identified locations for bicycle racks on Main St.
  • Advised DelDOT on the design of the Newark Transit Hub
  • Distributed safety information to University students
  • Published bicycling articles in local media

 

What’s Next

Your help is needed as we promote and plan a variety of future improvements. These include:

Infrastructure & parking

  • Promote planning for 2-way cycle track on Delaware Avenue
  • Update bicycle pavement markings, including additional Sharrows
  • Add more bicycle racks at businesses and throughout the Downtown

Education & encouragement

  • Promote safer cycling to University community
  • Teach safe bicycling through Newark Parks & Recreation
  • Educate motorists on proper behavior
  • Explore possible bike-sharing program

Safety & enforcement

  • Work with Newark Police, University Public Safety and DelDOT on Bicycle Safety Checkpoints
