Why do a bicycle plan?

The Newark Area Bicycle Interim Report was completed November 1996 by DelDOT and WILMAPCO. The report gave information about existing conditions in the City of Newark and surrounding area, proposed preliminary recommendations for improving bicycling infrastructure and raised issues that needed to be resolved to before developing a final Bicycle Facility Needs Plan.

Today, WILMAPCO and the Newark Bicycle Committee is updating plan, detailing ways to improve the safety, convenience and enjoyment of facilities for existing cyclists, while encouraging others to try bicycling. DelDOT, Newark City Council, and WILMAPCO have expressed an interest in making Newark a model for bicycle facilities in Delaware and the region. With more trips made by bicycle, Newark’s congestion and air quality can improve while improving the health of our residents.
